How can architecture function as a means of alleviating the fear often associated with dental centres?

With this central concern in mind, and in close collaboration with the dentists, a dental centre was designed to provide patients with a sense of safety and calm, while also enabling staff to work with focus and comfort.

In the existing shop, which previously operated as a hair salon, the double-height entrance was preserved so that the reception area would emphasize the importance of the clinic and create a sense of spaciousness from the very first interaction. The entrance functions as a transitional space, psychologically easing patients before receiving medical care.

The layout of the dental centre follows a clear progression from public to private space. From the street toward the interior, spaces gradually transition from open and publicly accessible areas to more private and controlled environments. Reception and waiting areas are positioned beneath the 6-meter double-height ceiling, creating the atmosphere of a hotel lobby and distancing the space from the stereotypical image of a dental clinic.

The two main treatment rooms were designed with generous dimensions to accommodate multiple usage scenarios. The space allows dentists and assistants to work comfortably, provides flexibility for specialized staff when needed, and offers patients the option to be accompanied if they wish. The panoramic X-ray machine was placed in a more secluded location, ensuring that the rest of the patients will not get affected by radiation.

Spaces without patient access, such as the laboratory, sterilization area, and server room, were placed toward the rear of the clinic, ensuring clear functional separation and smooth day-to-day operation.

On the mezzanine level were placed the rest areas, a meeting office and a small kitchen. The existing staircase was preserved, and the area beneath it was utilized for storage, enhancing functionality without unnecessary additional costs.

The design of the clinic fully complies with current accessibility and fire safety regulations. At the same time, certain walls were reinforced with lead to protect staff from the radiation to which they are frequently exposed.

Throughout the design process, BIM (Building Information Modelling) was used to integrate all medical equipment into the three-dimensional planning, ensuring ergonomics, precision, and the efficient operation of the centre from the study phase onward.

At our office, we believe that the quality of space for staff is equally—if not more—important than that for visitors. When dentists and support staff work in a balanced and pleasant environment, this directly reflects in the quality-of-care patients receive.

For the interior design and aesthetic enhancement of the space, the dentists collaborated with Interior Architect Ms. Andrea Charalambous (Kivo Design House). Ms. Andrea played a decisive role in creating a contemporary, calm, and welcoming environment.
